SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions)
We help children and adolescents overcome problems in daily life and strive to be the best versions of themselves. Through talking with a psychologist, individuals and families can learn about specific strategies to address multiple concerns as related to stress, self-esteem, anxiety or depression, social skills, maladaptive behavioral patterns as well as family conflict or parent-child relationship struggles. We utilize research-based techniques to teach strategies and tools that help make life’s challenges seem lighter and more manageable. We avoid a “one size fits all” approach, and tailor our interventions to the specific needs and desires of our patients.
For anxious children, our provider Dr. Halverson is trained in SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions). This works by changing how parents respond to anxious behaviors in children, such as asking parents to stay with them until they fall asleep, or avoiding places and things that they are afraid of. In SPACE, parents are trained to assure their child that even though their fear is uncomfortable, they can handle it. This is especially helpful for younger kids with anxiety, fears/phobias and OCD.
